Your Dental Exam Can Include a Fluoride Treatment for Added Cavity Prevention

Posted .

Having a routine dental exam and cleaning performed twice each year plays an important role in preserving the health of your teeth and other oral tissues. The appointment starts with a professional dental cleaning performed by one of Dr. Deborah Backiel’s dental hygienists. This will remove all plaque and hardened tartar from your teeth while polishing away minor dental stains.

Dr. Backiel will then examine your mouth for any signs of cavities, gum disease, or other oral health conditions. Should she find early signs of demineralized tooth enamel she might recommend administering a fluoride treatment to bolster the strength of your teeth.

It only takes a few minutes to perform. Once done the fluoride treatment will bolster the mineral strength of your tooth enamel to help resist future cavities as well as reducing your chances of experiencing tooth sensitivity caused by enamel erosion.

Dr. Backiel will administer the treatment by pouring a small amount of concentrated fluoride gel into trays. Then she will insert them your mouth with a suction wand. They will need to be held there for a few minutes.

Maintaining a consistent daily oral hygiene routine will help you maintain healthy teeth by resisting cavities between your regular dental exams.
